Evie interrupted Rita’s reading. “Do you believe in the afterlife, Rita?”
Rita lowered the book. “What?”
“The afterlife.”
“I don’t believe in anything I can’t see with my own eyes or touch with my own hands,” Rita answered.
“Well, I believe.”
“Why am I not surprised?” Rita asked ironically.
Evie sat up in her bunk. “I don’t mean ghosts and the like. Or spirits. I’d never go to a séance like this Paul character. And I don’t believe in the ordinary Heaven and Hell. But I do think there may be a moment between life and death when, well . . . anything can happen. A whole other life, for example, experienced from beginning to end in what would seem to those still here as the mere blink of an eye, as brief as someone’s final breath. But to the dying person, it would seem eternal.”
“A whole imagined life lived all in an instant?”
“Exactly.”
“Ridiculous,” Rita said.
“I wouldn’t be so sure. Even Einstein said that time is an illusion. Or something like that.”
“So now you’re quoting Einstein?”
“Actually, the idea comes from one of Sam’s stories.”
“Oh, Sam.” The tall detective/aspiring writer. It was too late at night to get started on him again.
“He submitted the story to all of the pulps, but none of them bought it,” Evie continued.
“Gee, I wonder why,” Rita answered. But sarcasm was lost on Evie.
“I think they turned it down because it was too philosophical for them,” she answered. “No other reason, since it’s such a compelling idea, right?”
“A whole additional life that is lived in the final moment of one’s ‘real’ life?”
“Exactly.”
“Well, it’s an idea. I don’t know how compelling.”
“But Sam’s story . . .” Evie started.
“Look Evie,” Rita interrupted. “Do you want to hear more of the book or not?”
“Sure, please. Go on.”
Rita picked up where she had left off.
